Fell running for beginners

Sometimes we pretend that fell running is a hard or a dangerous thing to do, but it’s really not. We’re just out for a nice day out in the hills, keeping fit and enjoying the local landscape. You’ll be amazed how easy it is to get started and how quickly you become addicted.

You don’t have to be skinny, young, fast or mad†. Anyone who runs a bit on the road or walks occasionally in the hills can take up fell running, and will immediately find that their walks and runs get more interesting.

Every few weeks Rob McKeever will lead a gentle group run for beginners. They’re 3 to 4 miles long and go at a very easy pace, and there will often be a top fell coach on hand to offer suggestions and encouragement. You’ll usually find a relaxed mixture of new runners, bored road runners, tired fell runners and people who’re just out for a gentle run.

Fell running doesn’t involve much gear and there are no gadgets to buy. All you need is a pair of trainers – the more grip the better – and an outfit that you can run in without getting too hot. Something that wicks will be most comfortable, but we are generally a scruffy bunch in old shoes and older shorts. Wear anything you feel comfortable running in.

If you have any questions or would like a lift, please call Rob on 824479 or write to robmck at talktalk.net, and if you’d like to come for a run, just turn up. We hope to see you there.

† you can end up that way, though.
